Ground in LaPlace sits low and holds water. The Mississippi River levee runs along one side of town. Swamp runs from the back of LaPlace out to Lake Pontchartrain. Town elevation in LaPlace is around ten feet above sea level. After a hard rain a yard stays soft for days. A slab ends up level with the grass instead of above it. Ditches silt in, culverts get crushed, and the water backs up onto the lawn. Storms make all of it worse. Hurricane Isaac pushed a surge into St. John the Baptist Parish in 2012. About 5,000 homes here flooded. Every bit of that is a dirt problem before it is anything else.
We are J-Rod's Dirt Work, based in Hammond, LA. LaPlace sits about 30 miles south of us, straight down I-55. That run crosses the Manchac swamp on the 22 mile bridge and drops us at I-10. We run a Kubota SVL75-3 tracked skid steer and a Case excavator. Small equipment or big equipment, we bring what the job calls for. In LaPlace we build pads, shape yards, cut ditches, and open up lots. We haul and spread fill dirt and put in gravel drives. LaPlace covers about 21.5 square miles of land on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Interstate 55 meets Interstate 10 here, and Airline Highway runs through the middle of town. The higher ground sits near the river along River Road. Head back toward Lake Pontchartrain and the ground falls away into swamp. Frenier and the lakefront sit at the low end of that slope. Two lots a half mile apart can drain nothing alike. What matters is where a lot sits on that fall from river to swamp. Ditches and culverts carry the rest.
Storms are the other half of it. Hurricane Isaac pushed a surge into St. John the Baptist Parish in 2012. It ran eight to ten feet in places. Hurricane Ida hit town hard on August 29, 2021. The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain levee project runs from the Bonnet Carre Spillway to the Mississippi River levee near Garyville. It is designed for 100 year hurricane and storm surge protection across three River Parishes. That project is about surge. Rain that falls on a flat yard is still a grading and drainage problem.
Low ground gets answered with height. We haul in fill dirt, place it in lifts, and compact each lift before the next one goes down. That is house pad work, and it is the usual starting point for new building on low ground. Mobile home pads and shop pads get built the same way. On a LaPlace lot that already sits close, the fix is yard leveling. A swale moves water off the slab and toward the ditch. Soft holes and wet spots get dug out and replaced with good material.
Older parts of town come with different work. A cracked driveway or a slab from a torn down building has to come out before anything new goes in. We break it out and haul it off. Storm damaged houses, sheds, and garages come down the same trip, and the lot gets left clean. Access matters too on the back streets and the lots off Airline Highway.
