Prairieville ground is flat and it holds water. Prairieville sits about 23 feet above sea level. Runoff takes a long, slow trip out, north to Bayou Manchac or east to the Amite River. After a hard rain the low spots show up fast. Water stands in the back yard for days. The new subdivision next door came up on fill, and that runoff now crosses your line. Prairieville sits on flat coastal plain ground that holds water. The parish line to the north is Bayou Manchac. Mississippi River levees cut it off from the river in the twentieth century, and it works as a drainage channel now. The Amite River takes the east side, out past Hope Villa toward Port Vincent. Ascension Parish stormwater ends up in Bayou Manchac, the Amite, the Blind River and the New River, then Lake Pontchartrain. That is a lot of flat miles between your back yard and anywhere the water can leave. A few inches of grade decide whether a Prairieville lot drains or ponds.
Rain is the other half of it. The 2016 flood put water in about a third of the homes in Ascension Parish. Roughly 15,000 homes and businesses flooded, most of them in the Galvez to St. Amant area. The water table sits close to the surface here, so people build up rather than dig down. Fill goes in, gets packed in lifts, and the pad comes up to the height the plan calls for. Then the rest of the lot gets shaped so water leaves on its own. It should never sit against a slab or a shop wall.
Prairieville grew from 26,895 people in 2010 to 33,197 in 2020. It is the largest community in Ascension Parish, and the parish itself added close to 20,000 people over that same decade. Subdivisions keep going in off Highway 42 and Airline Highway. Most of that work starts with a pad. Ascension Parish handles grading and fill permits through its planning department, and it runs drainage impact studies on new development. So the pad comes up and the water still gets a path off the lot. Our site prep work takes a raw lot to build-ready. If the ground is already open and only sits rough or wet, land grading is the smaller job.
Driveways are the other steady job here. Gravel laid straight on Prairieville ground will rut the first wet month. We build gravel driveways and roads with a base course under the top rock. A crown down the middle sends water to the sides instead of into ruts. Long drives on back acreage off Highway 73 get the same build. On older places the work starts with removal instead. Cracked slabs, old drives, sheds and mobile homes come out and get hauled off. After that the ground comes back to grade and the lot is left clean.
