Dirt work in Metairie usually starts with something old coming out. Metairie is on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, where the Causeway comes ashore. Kenner borders it to the west, and the 17th Street Canal marks the line with New Orleans. Railroad tracks form its south edge. It is the largest community in Jefferson Parish, but it is not a city. Metairie is unincorporated, so the parish handles the permits here. The ground changes across town, too. The Metairie Ridge is old high ground, while the rest of town sits low. Rain averages 62.5 inches a year, so a low yard with little fall can hold water.
J-Rod's Dirt Work is based in Hammond, LA, and Metairie sits inside our service area. We come south on I-55 across the Manchac swamp, then east on I-10 through Kenner. In Metairie we handle demolition of older and storm-damaged houses, sheds and garages, including teardowns before a rebuild. We also do concrete removal for old driveways, patios, slabs and sidewalks. Low or sinking yards off the ridge get fill dirt hauled in and spread. Our machines include a Kubota SVL75-3 tracked skid steer and a Case excavator. We take commercial lots too, like the ones along Causeway Boulevard and Veterans Boulevard. Estimates are free. No job too big or too small.

Metairie's high ground is the Metairie Ridge. It is a natural levee, formed by an ancient branch of the Mississippi River called Bayou Metairie. The Acolapissa people used the ridge as a road. It is the oldest road in the New Orleans area. A streetcar started running along it in the late 1910s. Upscale homes went up off that road in the 1920s, and the area is now called Old Metairie. On a lot that old, a teardown or slab removal often comes before any new grade.
Off the ridge, Metairie sits low. Its listed elevation is just 3 feet above sea level. Metairie covers about 23 square miles between the lake and the tracks. Veterans Boulevard was laid out alongside a drainage canal, and it grew into a commercial center. The central business district sits on Causeway Boulevard near the lake. Across the 17th Street Canal, we also do dirt work in New Orleans. On a Metairie lot, the job is getting water off the yard and away from the house.
Metairie has no city hall, so permits come from Jefferson Parish. The parish Building Permits Department was once called the Department of Inspection and Code Enforcement. It posts residential and commercial permit requirements on the parish website. Other parish offices review permits too, including Engineering and Floodplain Management. Once the parish permit is in hand, we take the house or garage down and haul the debris off. Old driveways, patios, slabs and sidewalks come out next. An overgrown back lot may need land clearing first.
With the lot clear, land grading shapes it so rain runs toward the street. A rebuild needs a firm, level pad, which is our site preparation work, with excavation for old footings first. For a new house, the parish sends the permit to Engineering for an online review. Parish code Chapter 14 sets building height rules because of the National Flood Insurance Program. Louisiana law calls for an 811 locate request 48 to 120 hours before digging, not counting weekends and holidays.
