Concrete removal is the job of getting old flatwork out of your way. We break up driveways, slabs, patios, sidewalks and footings and haul the pieces off. Driveways are the most common call. A concrete drive that has cracked into pieces or dropped at the apron comes out in sections. How long it takes depends on the size and the thickness. Patios, walkways and sidewalks come out the same way. So do garage slabs, shed pads and old carport pads that nobody uses. Some flatwork is four inches thick with wire mesh in it. Other slabs run six inches or more with rebar, which is normal where trucks parked. Thicker concrete takes longer to break and makes more to haul.
Old foundations and footings are the other half of this work. After a house or mobile home comes down, the slab and the footings stay in the ground. Footings are the thick concrete beams that ran under the walls. They sit deeper than the slab and hold more steel. Brick piers and old front steps get dug out with the excavator. On commercial lots we pull loading pads, parking slabs and equipment bases. Barn floors and old shop slabs come out the same way. Anything concrete that is in the way can come out.
Pulling concrete leaves a low, torn up spot. Old flatwork sits on a base of sand or gravel, and that base comes up with it. So the hole is deeper than the slab was thick. We fix that before we leave. If the area only dropped a few inches, we blend it into the ground around it. Then land grading shapes the surface so rain runs off instead of standing. If it dropped more, we haul in fill dirt, spread it in lifts and pack it down. It can go back to grass or hold a new pad.
Pouring new concrete is not our work. We take the old out and leave the lot ready for whoever pours next. Plenty of people never pour again. A cracked concrete drive can come back as a gravel driveway for less money. Gravel moves with soft ground instead of cracking on it. Others put the space back in grass and gain a bigger yard.
